In 1897, Katherine Tingley founded the Point Loma Universal Brotherhood and Theosophical Society Homestead in San Diego, California (‘Lomaland’ for short). I’m not going to explain their mission, since many others have done so – but suffice it to say people went there to ‘find themselves’. Despite the focus on yoga and other Indian religious beliefs, a few Egyptian elements were incorporated into the architecture. The first two vintage postcard views feature one of several different entrance gates, and the third postcard shows the interior of one of the buildings – note both the free-standing and engaged columns.
